Background:
The fitness app industry is loaded with products that are intimidating, overly complex, or hyper-gendered. Having faced this myself, I wanted to create something that could simplify the fitness journey, make it appealing for a beginner audience, and make fitness more accessible. I conceptualised MyFit, a new app prototype that is poised to shake up the fitness industry.
The Problem:
Gym stereotypes and intimidating culture (a concept known as ‘gymtimidation’) can cause working out to bring about anxiety for some, especially beginners.
I challenged myself to conceptualise, design and prototype this new app. It needed to be vastly different from what was on offer, put inclusivity first and include the mental health features that I found other fitness apps sorely lacked.
The Solution:
With the advice of a professional personal trainer, and after several months of research, surveys and usability testing, I crafted a prototype for MyFit. The app is designed to resonate not only with women, but with those new to fitness or wanting a gym app that puts wellbeing above all.
The biggest feature of my design is the ‘Workout Matcher’ quiz function, which matches the user with a workout based simple aspects like their mental health that day, if they slept well, and how much time they have.
Inclusive imagery features throughout, and there’s equal emphasis on a wide variety of workouts, from cardio to strength training.
I recommend viewing the Case Study to delve into my process, including research, phases of design and usability testing.
