Client: All Hallows’ School

Background:
The McAuley Building at All Hallows’ School is the building specially designed for the younger students, and was recently internally re-designed in tandem with architects. To match with the new interior of the building, I was asked to create a timeline of the life of Catherine McAuley for the foyer of the building.
The Problem:
The timeline needed to not only fill the space, it also needed to be the right design style to engage the students, and include practical considerations like using the right materials and ensuring it was created at the right height for our smaller students. In addition to these requirements, I was tasked with creating this timeline on a tight deadline to ensure it was ready for the building’s launch.
The Solution
I worked closely alongside the School’s Dean of Mission to gain an understanding of the content, and alongside student care teams to ensure it would be a design that spoke to the students. I chose to break each ‘era’ of Catherine McAuley’s life into one panel, and create a dynamic design, using playful bubble-style info circles and engaging sketches that referenced each era.
The background pattern of magnolias is a nod to the symbol of the School being the magnolia flower, and the winding blue ribbon is both reflective of the blue hair ribbons that the students know so well, and the Brisbane river. Subtle touches like this enabled me to pull inspiration from the School and the history into the design. I then researched the right materials and installation for the signage, and these custom acrylic panels were installed before building launch.
This design was a huge success, with both students and staff alike giving positive feedback long after its installation.
