Brisbane/Meanjin Indingenous Map

Client: All Hallows’ School Heritage Centre
Categories: Map Design, Print Design

Background:
All Hallows’ School is excited to be soon launching its new Heritage Centre, an on-site museum showcasing its 160-year history. The Centre also features a strong representation of the Indigenous significance of the land.

The Problem:
In tandem with the School’s Archives and Mission teams, I was invited to create the Meanjin Map, representing how the land surrounding the School in central Brisbane was used long before our time. The target audience for the Map is both school students visiting the Heritage Centre with their classes, and external visitors interested in the heritage of the School and the area. As such, the Map needed to resonate with children, represent and respect the Indigenous sites and culture while blending in modern landmarks, and provide a succinct piece of visual information.

The Solution
This was a highly collaborative project, involving a great deal of liaising with archival experts, who consulted with Indigenous researcher Dr Ray Kerkhove to obtain the fantastic mapping and historical information.

The design uses a blend of bold colours and vector illustrations, in tandem with hand-drawn sketches of key landmarks to give points of reference and historical insight.

Student engagement is achieved with the bright design, and extra teacher-student interaction is possible with the quiz panel at the bottom.

The new Heritage Centre will be launched in late 2024.
