Client: Torrens Metaverse (in tandem with Torrens Work Integrated Learning program)
Categories: UX/UI, Digital Design
Background:
With the Metaverse becoming a more mainstream and in-demand concept, Torrens University is setting out to create their own Metaverse, where students, staff and other members of the Torrens community can communicate, meet eachother virtually, and build connection. A key element of the Metaverse will be the avatar customisation system, where members can customise their avatar to look like them (or someone completely different!). Through the Torrens Work Integrated Learning program, I was able to create my concept for this system.
The Problem:
Whilst students at Torrens have generally good engagement, it could be improved. The problem therefore was a need to improve student engagement and involvement levels, ideally starting out in the Metaverse but flowing on to the university as whole, ultimately improving study engagement and student drive.
The challenge however, would be creating a system that both engaged the younger target audience, while still linking to the concept of study.
The Solution:
My goal was to develop an exciting avatar customisation experience that enhances user’s connectivity, student engagement and enjoyment of the Torrens Metaverse experience.
I went for a gaming-inspired take on avatar customisation, creating a user experience that connects with the 18-24 year old target audience and offers something unique.
My design – nicknamed ‘Create Your Study Hero’ – blends gaming-style avatar creation with nods to Torrens. Avatars can earn XP through progress in the student’s study, unlock special equipment items by reaching a certain point in their course, and use their avatar in the Metaverse to interact with a virtual community.
I recommend viewing the Case Study to delve into my process, including research, phases of design and usability testing.
